Rhetoric Essay
The author is David Papineau, who is a writer at the New York Times and has written many books on this subject. Since he is from the New York Times, a credible source, he’s a credible author. The author’s audience is basically the general public and anyone who has watched soccer, or who hasn’t watched it, as well as Americans in general.
The tone is informative because the author is trying to inform readers on the process and how players strategize their plays and why they do things such as hurting themselves to gain an advantage. The purpose of the article is to inform the readers about news from the World Cup, and soccer watchers about all the tricks that players use. The genre of this piece is a newspaper article, and one of the features is the headline as well as the work cited at the end. The medium is an online article since The New York Times is only available online.
At the time of this piece, the world cup was going on and everyone around the world was watching it and rooting for their respective teams. The cultural expectations were that different teams from different countries had to live up to the expectations that their country puts on them. The author has a negative stance because he feels that most players were known for things like getting hurt and that isn’t what we, watchers, want to know them as. We know them solely for their skills. He also mentions the stereotypes that people have on the teams.
